Lecture Description
Tens of thousands of people flee their home countries every year seeking safety from persecution, war, and violence. In the last four decades, the United States has welcomed more than 3 million refugees from all over the world.  Karen Brownlee focused her research on the roughly 2,000 Somali refugees living in Northern Kentucky. What did it take to come here? What did they leave behind? You will leave with an understanding of the refugee experience in our community.

Karen Brownlee
Karen Brownlee is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Social Work at NKU. In the course of her Community Practice class, Karen was introduced to the Northern Kentucky Somali refugee community, with whom she continues to work on local advocacy projects. Karen is married with three children, works on a local farm, and volunteers at her synagogue and at her children’s school.
