Racism and our Catholic Response

November 18, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

In the US Catholic Bishops document “Brothers and Sisters to Us,” they tell us that “Racism is a sin: a sin that divides the human family, blots out the image of God among specific members of that family, and violates the fundamental human dignity of those called to be children of the same Father.”

In the American context, racism has often been called “America’s Original Sin.”

For many white Americans, it is difficult to understand the impact that racism has on our brothers and sisters of color. Like all sin, racism has both an individual and a structural component.

Join the UC Catholic Newman Club as Brice Mickey, director of RAPP at the University of Cincinnati, and Deacon Royce Winters, Director of African American Catholic Ministries for the Archdiocese, lead us through an examination of race and what our Catholic response should be, if we are to be a church of the Gospel.

Mr. Mickey’s presentation is called “Diversity and Inclusion.”
Deacon Winters’ presentation is called “Racism & Justice: Promoting Peace In Our Communities.”

The Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center will provide trained facilitators for small group discussion.

This evening will offer an opportunity for hard questions and frank discussion.

We hope that you will be stretched.
We hope that you will feel uncomfortable and challenged.
We hope that you come away with the recognition that we are called as Catholics to dismantle racism wherever we find it: in ourselves, our Church, our University Campus and the world.
