‘Igniting’ Policy Change via Postcards in Anderson Township
By Barb Ross
Inspired by the Immigration 101 program presented by Ignite Peace and sponsored by Greater Anderson Promotes Peace (GAPP) and Anderson Churches for Racial Unity (ACRU), our team wanted to follow up with action to continue helping to protect immigrants in our community. One team member had just learned about new legislation, the Protecting Sensitive Locations Act. Another team member had experience with postcard-writing and using local venues to promote social interaction while advocating for policy. A third team member had contacts at two local breweries. Suddenly, a plan ‘ignited’. Exactly one month after our Immigration 101 event, we’ve now held another very successful event—and we had a chance to get together with other people who support immigration for a very enjoyable evening.

Will our postcards to Congressmen Landsman and Taylor and Senators Moreno and Husted change their hearts and minds on HR 1061 and S 455 protecting the sanctity of worship and access without fear to health care and education? We sure hope so. But if not, let our presence and witness to our neighbors and the immigrant community let them know we see the cruelty and injustice and are working hard at finding solutions.
In peace and unity.
