“How Can I Help?” A Community Response to Increased Immigration Enforcement

By Andrew Lion

Across our country, neighbors are asking themselves the same question: How can I help? In a time when immigrant families face such systemic injustice, community action matters more than ever. The great news is that there are many ways for all of us to get involved. Ignite Peace, through the Immigrant Dignity Coalition, offers countless opportunities for volunteer work and other ways to plug in. Whether you have an hour or a month, you can make a difference. Our work depends on people like you who are willing to stand in solidarity and take action.

One essential role is supporting immigrant families in need through transportation and accompaniment. Members of the transportation team help drive people to immigration check-ins, court hearings, or any other personal appointments they may have. For many, simply having someone there during these moments can provide reassurance and dignity. You could volunteer to accompany your immigrant neighbors to important appointments so they do not have to navigate the system alone. Or, volunteer to drop off donated goods. It is up to you; choose what speaks to you.

Education is also critical to our mission of protecting our communities. Volunteers can be trained to give Know Your Rights presentations and help lead workshops on topics like power of attorney and family preparedness. These trainings equip immigrant families with tools to understand and use their rights. You can also canvas locally owned businesses such as barbershops, car washes, and restaurants to share resources and to make sure they know how to protect patrons and staff.

Beyond direct support, there are still many ways to contribute! You can join our email list and get updates on any new events or volunteer opportunities. These events include Immigrant Dignity Coalition monthly meetings that aim to inform, connect, and mobilize around issues affecting immigrant communities in the greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area. You can also come up with your own initiatives; everyone loves new ideas!

If you enjoy bringing others together, consider hosting a fundraiser or donation drive. It could be for items like hygiene products, gift cards, or food. Anything to help or support families dealing with detention or legal fees.

Our work grows stronger every time someone steps forward. If we care for one another, we can build a community where justice is possible for everyone! To get plugged in with these initiatives, start by filling out this form!
