SUMMARY:Film Screening and Discussion - Nuclear Savage: The Islands of Secret Project 4.1
DESCRIPTION:The film tells the story of the human impacts of nuclear weapons on the people of the Marshall Islands and the secret radiation experiments that were conducted on them during the time of U.S. nuclear testing in the islands (1946-58) and afterwards. It is a catalyst for discussion about not only nuclear weapons and peace\, but also racism\, colonialism\, and indigenous rights. \nAfter the film screening (55 minutes)\, Rick Wayman of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation in California will host a Q&A and discussion about the film and other issues relating to the Marshall Islands and nuclear weapons. Wayman just returned from two weeks in The Hague\, where he supported the legal team representing the Marshall Islands at the International Court of Justice in their nuclear disarmament lawsuits against India\, Pakistan and the United Kingdom. The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation\, is a consultant to the Marshall Islands and is also supporting their court case against the United States in U.S. Federal Court calling for fulfillment of existing international legal obligations for nuclear disarmament. \nThis event will take place in Alter Hall Room 106

SUMMARY:15 Years Later: The Cincinnati Riots and the Future of the City
DESCRIPTION:Fifteen years ago\, in response to the police shooting of Roger Owensby and Timothy Thomas\, protests\, social unrest and riots erupted in Over-the-Rhine. The result was a deep and comprehensive period of community reflection about the relations between the police and African American communities in Cincinnati. \nFifteen years later it is time to reflect again on how far we have come and what more we need to do as a community to ensure fair and just policing that works with communities to solve problems and addresses fundamental issues such as economic inclusion . \nJoin us with key leaders who were involved in shaping the Collaborative Agreement and responses from contemporary voices from the community. \nThe event\, free and open to the public\, will be held February 2\, 2016. \nSponsored by The President’s Office at Xavier University.  Co-sponsored by the Ethics/Religion and Society  Program at Xavier\, The Eigel Center for Community-Engaged Learning at Xavier\, The Center for Diversity and Inclusion\, at Xavier\, and The Brueggeman Center for Dialogue at Xavier. \n  \n
