SUMMARY:Just Listening: A Workshop on Listening As an Act of Justice
DESCRIPTION:I have learned that when we begin listening to each other\, and when we talk about things that matter to us\, the world begins to change. Human conversation is the most ancient and easiest way to cultivate the conditions of change — personal change\, community\, and organizational change.”   -Margaret Wheatley\n\nAs our communities and planet continue suffering from injustice\, hate\, and disease\, we are now experiencing intense political divisiveness and strained public discourse. Whether in our local community of Cincinnati or on the national and global political stage\, civil discourse is necessary for peacemaking and community building. For effective discourse\, listening ‒ deep listening ‒ is required. In times of fear and anxiety listening can again become an effective tool. That is why we are pleased to offer as our program: a workshop on listening as the ultimate act of justice. \nREGISTER TODAY AND BRING A FRIEND! \nWorkshop Details\nWorkshop Leader: Sharon Browning \nSharon provides JUST Listening consultation and training to a wide range of organizations. She is an attorney\, former Executive Director of Philadelphia VIP\, the hub of pro bono legal services in Philadelphia\, and also taught for fifteen years in the Sociology Department at Chestnut Hill College\, Philadelphia. She is a trained mediator\, as well as a retreat facilitator\, spiritual guide and teacher\, focusing on the needs of marginalized individuals and groups. \nFor more information\, visit: https://justlistening.net \nCoffee and light refreshments provided. \nThis training will be offered with no cost but free will donations would be welcomed.

SUMMARY:Daniel Rudd: Calling a Church to Justice
DESCRIPTION:In May of 1890\, The Christian Solider\, an African American newspaper\, identified the Catholic journalist and activist Daniel Arthur Rudd as the “greatest negro Catholic in America.” Yet many Catholics today are unaware of Rudd’s efforts to bring about positive social change during the early decades of the Jim Crow era. \nDr. Gary Agee\, Associate Professor of Church History at Anderson University will present a compelling look at the life and work of this visionary who found inspiration in his Catholic faith to fight for the principles of liberty and justice.

SUMMARY:Love of Justice\, Love of Neighbor
DESCRIPTION:IJPC is hosting a fundraiser on February 11th from 9:30 – 11:30 AM for IJPC’s immigration program. The event will provide a space for newly trained YES (Youth Educating Society) members to share their story of immigration. The event will be held at St. Monica – St. George (328 W. McMillan). \nSharing personal narratives is a foundation of YES and these members will be able to practice the art of storytelling to a kind\, supportive audience before sharing to an unknown group or elected official. \nIJPC will provide a light breakfast and a chance to socialize and reenergize with friends and community members. Seating is limited so reserve your seat by emailing mel@IJPCcincinnati.org or call 513.579.8547. \nSpeaker Profiles: \nEsther Cabrera:\nEsther Cabrera is the daughter of an undocumented single mother. Born in North Carolina\, she is able to obtain many things that her mom and brother\, José\, cannot. While at the age of 15 José had to get a job at a mechanic shop that paid under the table\, Esther was able to apply to her first job at T.J. Maxx without trouble. Esther is a junior at Roger Bacon High School and a YES Advisory Board member. \n  \nMari Lopez:\nMari Lopez was born in San Luis Potosi\, Mexico and is one of the roughly 750\,000 DACAmented students. Today\, she’s a junior at Colerain High School and a YES member. As a young girl\, Mari went to Cincinnati Interfaith Workers Center (CIWC) meetings with her parents who were members at the time. There\, Mari learned the importance of organizing and standing up to what is justice for everyone\, not a few. \n  \nAlex Nizigiyimana:\nAlex Nizigiyimana was born in Tanzania but is from Burundi. Born in a refugee camp\, Alex came to the U.S. at a young age. Today he attends the University of Cincinnati studying IT. His hard work and determination got him on the cover of his high school magazine to show other potential Cristo Rey High School students what they can achieve. Alex is a proud recent member of YES. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Racism and our Catholic Response
DESCRIPTION:In the US Catholic Bishops document “Brothers and Sisters to Us\,” they tell us that “Racism is a sin: a sin that divides the human family\, blots out the image of God among specific members of that family\, and violates the fundamental human dignity of those called to be children of the same Father.” \nIn the American context\, racism has often been called “America’s Original Sin.” \nFor many white Americans\, it is difficult to understand the impact that racism has on our brothers and sisters of color. Like all sin\, racism has both an individual and a structural component. \nJoin the UC Catholic Newman Club as Brice Mickey\, director of RAPP at the University of Cincinnati\, and Deacon Royce Winters\, Director of African American Catholic Ministries for the Archdiocese\, lead us through an examination of race and what our Catholic response should be\, if we are to be a church of the Gospel. \nMr. Mickey’s presentation is called “Diversity and Inclusion.”\nDeacon Winters’ presentation is called “Racism & Justice: Promoting Peace In Our Communities.” \nThe Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center will provide trained facilitators for small group discussion. \nThis evening will offer an opportunity for hard questions and frank discussion. \nWe hope that you will be stretched.\nWe hope that you will feel uncomfortable and challenged.\nWe hope that you come away with the recognition that we are called as Catholics to dismantle racism wherever we find it: in ourselves\, our Church\, our University Campus and the world.
