SUMMARY:Day at the Statehouse: Human Trafficking (FULL/WAITLIST)
DESCRIPTION:***The registration for Day at the Statehouse is now at capacity. If you would like to join the waitlist in the event that a registered participant cannot attend\, please continue filling out the registration form.*** \nAll are invited to join IJPC and End Slavery Cincinnati in Columbus\, OH on Wednesday\, November 16 for a Day at the Statehouse. We’ll meet up with other anti-human trafficking coalitions from all around the state to support the passage of Ohio Senate Bill 183 / House Bill 319: Enact Expanding Human Trafficking Justice Act. \nSB 183 and HB 319 would expand the criminal record expungement program to help more survivors of trafficking get a fresh start once they’re out of their trafficking situation. We know that trying to find a job or a safe place to live is extremely difficult when you have a criminal record. For many human trafficking survivors\, being arrested for crimes they didn’t commit is a common reality. Traffickers often force their victims to take the blame for something they did\, or force them to commit illegal acts on their behalf. \n***The registration for Day at the Statehouse is now at capacity. If you would like to join the waitlist in the event that a registered participant cannot attend\, please continue filling out the registration form.*** \n\, so we can drop off the signatures to our legislators on November 16. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Expungement: A Fresh Start for Survivors of Human Trafficking
DESCRIPTION:All are invited to IJPC’s virtual educational event\, “Expungement: A Fresh Start for Survivors of Human Trafficking” on Thursday\, November 3 from 6:00-7:30PM. This session will feature a panel of experts who can break down what criminal record expungement is and why it’s important to survivors of human trafficking. RSVP now through Zoom! \nThe panel will feature Barbara Freeman\, founder of The Freeman Project in Columbus\, and Verjine Adanalian\, Director of the Second Chance Project at the Ohio Justice and Policy Center in Cincinnati. \nBarbara Freeman is a survivor of sex trafficking who has been out of the life for 13 and a half years. She says that living this life has not been easy\, but she has been able to maintain by putting her life back together with the help of Catch Court Amethyst and many other people in her community. She says\, “It was very hard for me in the beginning because I had no skill set from being trafficked at an early age of 13 years old. Being coerced and not being able to make decisions for myself made it hard for me.” With the expungement program\, she was able to go to school and to get jobs. They gave her a career as a peer recovery support specialist\, as a chemical dependency counselor\, and as a motivational speaker. “Today I can say that I am very grateful that I was given the chance to live again.” \n  \nVerjine Adanalian is an attorney and the Director of the Second Chance Project at the Ohio Justice & Policy Center. OJPC is a nonprofit\, public interest law firm\, whose mission is to create fair\, intelligent\, redemptive criminal justice systems. Verjine joined OJPC in 2018 as an Equal  \nJustice Works fellow\, specializing in providing legal services to victims of human trafficking. At OJPC\, Verjine provides direct representation\, community outreach\, and policy advocacy. She represents clients that are in our community and clients that are currently incarcerated. Verjine is an adjunct professor at Wright State University\, where she teaches classes on human trafficking and the criminal justice system to graduate students in the Applied Behavioral Sciences master’s program. Verjine graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Law\, where she served as Managing Editor of the Human Rights Quarterly academic journal. \nRSVP now through Zoom!

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Race and Racism in Cincinnati Bus Tour
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: The October 19th bus tour is sold out! Additional tour opportunities coming in Spring 2020. Stay tuned.  \nPlease join Rethinking Racism for a people’s history bus tour of the greater Cincinnati area as it relates to black and indigenous histories. \nOur two hour tour will begin in Northern Kentucky and travel throughout Cincinnati\, stopping at 6 sites of racial significance.  Volunteer tour guides will provide participants with relevant knowledge and food for thought. \nThe perspective of the tour derives from a legacy of peoples history or history from below. According to Urbana Peoples History project\, this type of history …attempts to account for historical events from the perspective of common people rather than political and other leaders. \nGiven that the collaborators on this project are not trained historians but interested citizens\, the information we’ll share is our attempt to bring more visibility to history that is usually unseen both in our city’s landscape and in our textbooks. \nSpace is limited so please register below and stay tuned for more tour dates next spring. We hope you can join us! \nRegister here.  \nFacebook event here.

SUMMARY:Rally for Hope: Stop Separating Families
DESCRIPTION:Nationwide\, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been conducting target enforcement actions\, focusing on immigrant women and children who have arrived from Central America in the last two years. With the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Price Hill in early February\, fear continues to plague the local immigrant community\, many afraid to leave their homes for work or school. Cities across the nation including Chicago\, Minneapolis\, and Raleigh have held public protest and vigils in opposition to these enforcement tactics asking DHS to stop separating families. Local community members and organizations\, including the Archdiocese of Cincinnati\, Catholic Charities of Southwestern Ohio\, Cincinnati Interfaith Workers Center\, ELL Foundation\, Holy Family Church\, Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center\, LULAC\, and NKU Latino Institute for Excellence have come together to plan a Rally for Hope with a message to “Stop Separating Families” for Saturday March 12\, 2016\, from 1:00-3:00pm to show support for the immigrant community. \n  \nWith this intention\, all are invited to join in a rally and two mile walk beginning at Holy Family Church in Price Hill and walking down Grand to Warsaw\, continuing to Kroger and through the Price Hill Community. Showing support for the immigrant community in this public way allows those in fear to know they are not alone and there are many who stand on the side of our immigrant neighbors. Those interested in participating are asked to meet in the parking lot of Holy Family behind the church.

SUMMARY:Opposition to Immigration Raids - Meeting
DESCRIPTION:On Christmas Eve\, an article in the Washington Post shared the unfortunate news that the US is planning raids to deport immigrants who have already received removal orders. The article states this may happen as soon as January. The American Immigration Lawyers Association sent a letter to President Obama in opposition to this Department of Homeland Security plan on New Year’s Eve. As 2016 has just begun\, we must commit to supporting the immigrant community into the New Year and beyond.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin the Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center and the Cincinnati Interfaith Worker Center as we gather together to better understand the situation and mobilize against deportations in our community and in our country. A meeting will be held at 5:30pm on Thursday 1/7 in the lobby of the Peaslee Neighborhood Center (215 E 14th Street Cincinnati\, OH 45202).
