We have a plan and you’re invited to participate! \nThe Pro-Action Café is a chance to bring any of your musings\, ideas\, projects and dreams to the table and have the opportunity to talk with others about their thoughts and ideas. Perhaps a workable plan will emerge and you will have some people to work with you – or you may find a project or plan that “strikes home” with you\, in which case you can be part of a group working on something about which you feel passionate. There will also be people who have experience and a level of expertise bringing their talents to the table in the form of information\, the “right” questions\, and recommendations. \nThe attached flyer gives the basic time\, place and registration information. Additionally\, we want you to know that\, because of the nature of the evening\, this is a limited attendance event. We can accommodate 50 people. DESCRIPTION:Lecture Description\nTens of thousands of people flee their home countries every year seeking safety from persecution\, war\, and violence. In the last four decades\, the United States has welcomed more than 3 million refugees from all over the world.  Karen Brownlee focused her research on the roughly 2\,000 Somali refugees living in Northern Kentucky. What did it take to come here? What did they leave behind? You will leave with an understanding of the refugee experience in our community. \nKaren Brownlee\nKaren Brownlee is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Social Work at NKU. In the course of her Community Practice class\, Karen was introduced to the Northern Kentucky Somali refugee community\, with whom she continues to work on local advocacy projects. Karen is married with three children\, works on a local farm\, and volunteers at her synagogue and at her children’s school. \nSix@Six is a lecture series through Northern Kentucky University.

DESCRIPTION:This event is the third in the YWCA Greater Cincinnati Days of Dialogue Series. \nOn Nov. 20\, 2016\, Award-winning author of Between the World and Me and national correspondent for The Atlantic\, Ta-Nehisi Coates visited Xavier University in Cincinnati\, OH\, and gave a lecture on “On Race in America.” His words were thought-provoking and challenging. \nYWCA Greater Cincinnati is collaborating with the Center for Race\, Gender\, and Social Justice at the University of Cincinnati College of Law\, and IJPC (Intercommunity Justice & Peace Center) to offer a series of community dialogues to follow-up the Coates lecture and continue the conversation. The third in the series\, Days of Dialogue: Ta-Nehisi Coates\, will offer a safe space for community members to talk about and unpack some of the concepts Coates shared during his lecture. \nThe mission of the Dialogue Process\, which was developed by IJPC\, is: \n\nto create\, offer\, and facilitate experiences of learning about how to really listen to others whose opinions differ on significant social issues;\nto promote civil discourse;\nto stimulate critical thinking\, and;\nto create an opportunity where people can talk with others who differ and learn from them in a safe and comfortable environment.\n\nPlease join us for a thoughtful and engaging evening. DESCRIPTION:On April 4th 1967\, Dr. Martin Luther King gave an impassioned speech before a crowd on the steps of Riverside Church in New York City condemning the atrocity of the Vietnam War. He called for people to be obstinate in the face of the evils of warfare\, and said that\, “We as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a ‘thing-oriented’ society to a ‘person-oriented’ society. When machines and computers\, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people\, the giant triplets of racism\, materialism\, and militarism are incapable of being conquered.” It has become grossly apparent today that these inhuman triplets of despair have shown their stubborn implantation within the very fabric of our society. \nTo honor Dr. King’s charge to help our society embark on a “revolution of values”\, IJPC will host a potluck to reflect on Dr. King’s speech. There is no better way to foster discussion\, invite open-mindedness\, and bring about awareness than by engaging in humanity’s oldest expression of good fellowship: a meal. IJPC invites you and your friends to join us to listen to excerpts of Dr. King’s speech\, discuss its meanings and the pertinence it has within our society\, while enjoying a community potluck.

DESCRIPTION:This event is the second in the YWCA Greater Cincinnati Days of Dialogue Series. \nOn Nov. 20\, 2016\, Award-winning author of Between the World and Me and national correspondent for The Atlantic\, Ta-Nehisi Coates visited Xavier University in Cincinnati\, OH\, and gave a lecture on “On Race in America.” His words were thought-provoking and challenging. \nYWCA Greater Cincinnati is collaborating with Union Institute & University\, and IJPC (Intercommunity Justice & Peace Center) to offer a series of community dialogues to follow-up the Coates lecture and continue the conversation. The second in the series\, Days of Dialogue: Ta-Nehisi Coates\, will offer a safe space for community members to talk about and unpack some of the concepts Coates shared during his lecture. \nThe mission of the Dialogue Process\, which was developed by IJPC\, is: \n\nto create\, offer\, and facilitate experiences of learning about how to really listen to others whose opinions differ on significant social issues;\nto promote civil discourse;\nto stimulate critical thinking\, and;\nto create an opportunity where people can talk with others who differ and learn from them in a safe and comfortable environment.\n\nPlease join us for a thoughtful and engaging evening.
