SUMMARY:The Death Penalty\, Prison Reform & Our Justice System
DESCRIPTION:IJPC is partnering with the Tri-State Freethinkers on a night of education regarding many facets of our justice system. \nFacebook Event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1856876434322794/ \nFeaturing speakers: \nJAMES “JIMMER” DUDLEY\, INVESTIGATOR – The Innocence Project Prior to joining the Kentucky Innocence Project\, Jimmer Dudley worked as a security officer with the University of Kentucky Police Department assigned to the UK Chandler Medical Center. He also served in the United States Marine Corps from 1996 until 2007 as a Marine musician\, a Criminal Investigator with USMC Criminal Investigation Division and as a Marine Special Agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. With the NCIS\, Jimmer completed a tour in Iraq fulfilling a General Crimes mission. \nPierre Bergeron – The impact of Judges\nHe is one of the top appellate attorneys in the country. A partner at the global law firm of Squire Patton Boggs\, Pierre chairs the firm’s Appellate and Supreme Court practice group\, and his peers honored him as Cincinnati’s 2018 Appellate Lawyer of the Year. Pierre also clerked for appellate judge David Nelson on the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati\, where he gained first-hand knowledge of the appellate process. \nDarlene Rogers – Criminal Justice Reform\nMs. Rogers lives in Anderson Township and began her career in nearby Mt. Washington as a teacher for McNicholas High School where she led and mentored high school students. Even though teaching was such rewarding work\, she felt a higher calling to a different path of public service and chose to attend law school. After becoming a lawyer\, it was a small step to again work with children\, but this time defending them in court as a Hamilton County Public Defender in the Juvenile Division. It was at the Public Defender’s office that Ms. Rogers’ observed more injustice than she ever believed possible. She routinely witnessed disparate bonds\, plea deals and sentencing based upon race\, wealth and entitlement. These experiences are why she now sounds the alarm for the urgent need for Criminal Justice Reform. \nLacey Elizabeth Hopkins – AMOS Project\nThe AMOS Project\, along with the Ohio Organizing Collaborative\, is working to radically reduce the prison population through impactful criminal justice reform. Some of you may have already heard about the Safe and Healthy Communities Campaign and the push to get an initiative on the November Ballot that is for the people\, by the people. We’d LOVE to have your involvement in the signature collection process and all that that entails. \nSister Andrea Koverman: – The Death Penalty\nSr. Andrea Koverman is a newly vowed member of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati who can be found gardening\, hiking\, or rollerblading whenever time and weather permit. She was born in southern Texas\, raised outside of Dayton\, OH. After graduating from Miami University of Ohio with a degree in Special Education\, she taught public school students of the Gullah community on the sea islands of coastal South Carolina. While teaching\, she earned Master’s degrees in curriculum and educational leadership. Upon entering formation with her community\, she relocated to the El Paso area and taught in a Catholic school serving mostly Hispanic children and children of military servicemen and women. She witnessed the realities of our immigration system while assisting the sisters at their center for mothers of severely disabled children in Anapra\, a colonia of Juarez\, Mexico. Andrea has found service trips to Palestine and Haiti to be especially enlightening and rewarding. She dreams of working herself out of a job when there are no more issues of peace and justice to address! \nSarah Steinkamp- The Giving Fields\nThe Giving Fields\, Freestore Foodbank’s community farm located in Melbourne\, Kentucky\, provides fresh produce for Northern Kentucky food pantries.

SUMMARY:News conference calling on Congress to support Dream Act
DESCRIPTION:DACA recipients will join the president of Xavier University to call on our local members of Congress to support a clean Dream Act allowing young immigrants to work\, study and raise families without fear of deportation. \nEach day\, 122 young immigrants lose their protection from deportation because of President Trump’s decision last fall to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). The deadline given to Congress of March 5th is quickly approaching next week and we need our leaders to act to protect young immigrants in our schools and communities. This is an urgent moral imperative and a clean Dream Act is the permanent solution we need. \nPress Conference will take place at Xavier University\, Clocktower Lounge\, Third floor of the Gallagher Student Center (room 360)\, 3800 Victory Parkway\, Cincinnati\, OH 45207. Parking available in the visitor’s lot by the Cintas Center. \nSpeakers Include:\nJosé Cabrera\, Xavier University Class of 2018\, Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center\, and\nDACA recipient\nFr. Michael Graham\, SJ\, Xavier University President\nSr. Tracy Kemme\, SC\, Sr. Andrea Koverman\, SC\, and Sr. Jean Miller\, SC\, Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati\nHeyra Avila\, DACA Recipient

All other lots on and around campus are open\, but will fill up quickly. We recommend coming early\, maybe having an early dinner on or near campus. The best and closest lot to the Gallagher Student Center is the one behind it\, which can be entered either from Dana Ave. to University Dr. or directly from Victory Dr. There is a lot across Victory near the soccer field\, very limited parking on the circle near Bellarmine Chapel which is accessed from Cleneay Ave.\, behind Smith Business Bldg off Francis Xavier Way\, and in various other lots. There will be people directing traffic and if stopped\, folks should say they are attending an event at the GSC to be allowed to pass.\n\n\n\n\n\nHere are links to campus maps:\n\n\nhttps://www.xavier.edu/about/documents/campusmap.pdf\nhttps://www.xavier.edu/about/map.cfm

SUMMARY:Just Listening: A Workshop on Listening As an Act of Justice
DESCRIPTION:I have learned that when we begin listening to each other\, and when we talk about things that matter to us\, the world begins to change. Human conversation is the most ancient and easiest way to cultivate the conditions of change — personal change\, community\, and organizational change.”   -Margaret Wheatley\n\nAs our communities and planet continue suffering from injustice\, hate\, and disease\, we are now experiencing intense political divisiveness and strained public discourse. Whether in our local community of Cincinnati or on the national and global political stage\, civil discourse is necessary for peacemaking and community building. For effective discourse\, listening ‒ deep listening ‒ is required. In times of fear and anxiety listening can again become an effective tool. That is why we are pleased to offer as our program: a workshop on listening as the ultimate act of justice. \nREGISTER TODAY AND BRING A FRIEND! \nWorkshop Details\nWorkshop Leader: Sharon Browning \nSharon provides JUST Listening consultation and training to a wide range of organizations. She is an attorney\, former Executive Director of Philadelphia VIP\, the hub of pro bono legal services in Philadelphia\, and also taught for fifteen years in the Sociology Department at Chestnut Hill College\, Philadelphia. She is a trained mediator\, as well as a retreat facilitator\, spiritual guide and teacher\, focusing on the needs of marginalized individuals and groups. \nFor more information\, visit: https://justlistening.net \nCoffee and light refreshments provided. \nThis training will be offered with no cost but free will donations would be welcomed.

SUMMARY:Engage: Explore Nonviolent Living Study Program. Week 1 - Tuesday Sessions
DESCRIPTION:IJPC is offering the Engage: Exploring Nonviolent Living Study Program starting January of 2018 to anyone interested in learning\, practicing\, and experimenting with the power of creative nonviolence to transform our lives and our world. \nEngage is designed to be a small group learning process done each week for 2 to 2.5 hours. For the sake of convenience\, we will offer sessions on both Mondays from 1:00-3:00 P.M\, and Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:30 at the Intercommunity Justice & Peace Center. Monday sessions will begin on January 8 and Tuesday sessions on January 9. Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions as much as possible\, but can do the readings independently for any missed session. For the sake of developing a learning community\, it would be best choose one of the scheduled options and stick to it. Please notify IJPC if you have a conflict in your schedule during a particular week so that we can plan accordingly. Readings will be sent to registered participants via email. The program is organized into three parts: \nPart I (Sessions 1-5) familiarizes participants with how violence and nonviolence work. \nPart II (Sessions 6-8) explores nonviolent responses to structural violence. \nPart III (Sessions 9-12) guides participants through the process of developing and carrying out nonviolent action. \nSpace is limited and we will register people on a first-come-first-served basis. Please sign up for Engage by clicking here.
