DESCRIPTION:Join IJPC and the National Association of Social Workers\, Ohio Chapter for a virtual awards ceremony. \nIn lieu of the NASW Ohio Social Work Celebration Gala\, which has been cancelled due to COVID-19\, we will be hosting a Virtual Awards Celebration on Saturday\, June 13th from 7 – 8pm. \nDuring the virtual ceremony we will be recognizing all our outstanding award winners and state winners will have the opportunity to share acceptance speeches. We will also have a live musical performance\, raffle prizes\, and other fun features. So\, invite your friends\, family\, and colleagues and join in the celebration! Fancy Zoom-call attire is encouraged. \nAll will be welcome to attend the virtual event for free or by purchasing a $20 donation ticket. Proceeds will support NASW Ohio’s advocacy on behalf of social workers during this critical time and our Statewide Agency of the Year\, Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center (IJPC). \nCOVID-19 has exposed the unjust systems IJPC works to change and has created more inequality and injustice in our communities. IJPC works collaboratively to protect incarcerated people and immigrant detainees from COVID-19 and free all those who should be released. While we mourn their loss\, we also mourn the countless black men and women who have been lynched before them. We’re outraged at their deaths and outraged that justice for them and their families has not been delivered; we’re outraged that video recording is a prerequisite for justice for black murder victims only. White people going unpunished for racist\, brutal acts is the rule\, not the exception\, in America. DESCRIPTION:Join our friends at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center for a moderated panel discussion on how to prevent sex and labor trafficking.\n\nIncluded with general admission \nAnti-trafficking organizations and activists fight this oppressive system using the three “P’s:” Protection\, Prosecution\, and Prevention. Prevention is often referred to as “The Forgotten P” due to the fact that most nonprofits focus on protecting victims and survivors and prosecuting traffickers. Effective prevention of both sex and labor trafficking involves the participation of diverse sectors of society including health care\, education\, the nonprofit sector\, law enforcement\, and government. Representatives from these sectors will share information about their ongoing efforts to keep people from falling into the hands of traffickers. SUMMARY:Community Event: Confinement\, Politics of Space and Bodies - CAC Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Symposium: February 29-March 1.  \nIJPC program manager\, Jessie Frank\, will be a speaker at the symposium on Saturday\, February 29th for Pairing 1\, “Institutional and Industrial Complexes: Confinement\, a Governmental Construction?” \n— \nThe group exhibition Confinement: Politics of Space and Bodies\, on view until March 1st at the Contemporary Arts Center\, Cincinnati (CAC)\, centers around the safety provided by restricted spaces\, while also evoking constriction and restriction. It discusses the effects of institutional systems of confinement and approaches notions of mobility and movement. In conjunction with the University of Cincinnati\, the CAC is proposing a two-day symposium the last weekend of the exhibition devoted to this ambiguous notion of “confinement.” This event will allow an in-depth conversation between film scholars\, faculty\, students\, exhibited artists and the general audience and aims to raise and possibly answer questions of established narratives: ownership over bodies and mapping out confinement through stories of resistance and surrender. \nThe program consists of three panels\, during which invited scholars and faculty will be conversing with artists from Confinement\, along with guests and visitors. For the first time\, the walls of Géographie\, the cell installation at the center of the exhibition\, which remained closed throughout its duration\, will be open to the public\, and film screenings will be organized inside of the artwork. Through this process of revelation\, the CAC offers an inside-view of the room\, which saw the confinement of three dancers. \nRead more about the symposium here.
