SUMMARY:Showing Up After MLK Day
DESCRIPTION:Who was Martin Luther King\, Jr. really? How would his activism be received today? His legacy as a non-violent activist for racial justice and civil rights is well-known\, but there is much more to his beliefs and activism that society leaves out. Join us as we take a deep dive into these questions and explore some of MLK’s lesser known works. Together\, we will commit to understanding MLK’s true legacy and carrying his legacy forward more than just 1 day of the year. \nThis free event will take place Thursday\, February 1\, 2018 from 6:30-8:30pm at NorthChurch located at 4222 Hamilton Ave\, Cincinnati\, OH 45223. We look forward to seeing you there! \nRSVP at Eventbrite here. \nThe organizers of Rethinking Racism include the YWCA of Greater Cincinnati\, Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center\, the City of Cincinnati Office of Human Relations\, and several independent volunteers. We are grateful to North Presbyterian Church for their partnership on this event!

SUMMARY:The Narrow Path: Walking Toward Peace and Nonviolence with John Dear
DESCRIPTION:Nonviolent Cincinnati will be hosting this movie and discussion night. The movie shown will be “The Narrow Path: Walking Toward Peace and Nonviolence with John Dear.” Please reserve your ticket so we have an idea of how many people to expect. \nJohn Dear is a celebrated peace activist and the author of over twenty books; he also served as a chaplain ministering to the families of those killed on September 11th at the World Trade Centre. His life story has been a journey into the radical message of the Gospel and Jesus’ instruction to love our enemies. Following in the footsteps of the great apostles of nonviolence – Mahatma Gandhi\, Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, Dorothy Day\, Thomas Merton\, Oscar Romero and Daniel and Philip Berrigan – John Dear\, who has been arrested and imprisoned over 75 times\, crisscrosses the United States and the world tirelessly preaching the message of the nonviolent Jesus. Sadly\, this film will upset and disturb many people. But the Gospel is disturbing\, if you take it seriously. Making this film changed the lives of those who made it\, and I pray it changes the lives of many who watch it. — From the Director’s note\, Gerry Straub.

SUMMARY:Remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki - Film & Panel
DESCRIPTION:Join IJPC’s Peace Committee at the Xavier University Kennedy Auditorium for a film and panel discussion. We are co-sponsoring this event in remembrance of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We have to remember and face these horrors so we don’t repeat such an atrocity. We are inching ever closer to another nuclear attack\, with tensions building with Iran\, between North and South Korea\, and the US’s resent refusal to sign the UN’s Treaty to Ban Nuclear Weapons.

SUMMARY:Pro-Action Café
DESCRIPTION:Now that you’ve attended one or more Rethinking Racism Open Space events\, or even if you’ve found this for the first time\, you might have found yourself thinking\, “Where can I go with my passion and energy?” “What can I do?” Rethinking Racism has been thinking about this\, too. We have a plan and you’re invited to participate! \nThe Pro-Action Café is a chance to bring any of your musings\, ideas\, projects and dreams to the table and have the opportunity to talk with others about their thoughts and ideas. Perhaps a workable plan will emerge and you will have some people to work with you – or you may find a project or plan that “strikes home” with you\, in which case you can be part of a group working on something about which you feel passionate. There will also be people who have experience and a level of expertise bringing their talents to the table in the form of information\, the “right” questions\, and recommendations. \nThe attached flyer gives the basic time\, place and registration information. Additionally\, we want you to know that\, because of the nature of the evening\, this is a limited attendance event. We can accommodate 50 people. RSVPs through eventbrite are necessary. \nOur hope is that out of this past year of talking\, sharing and listening\, will come action that will contribute to the raising up of equality and equity in our city.

SUMMARY:Peace Committee Meeting: Staff reflection from time in Israel & Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Andrea Koverman\, SC\, will share a reflection of her time in Israel and Palestine.  Andrea and two other colleagues visited Israel and Palestine through HOPE (Holy Land Outreach Promoting Education). Their mission included visiting Jordan where they met Fr. Khalil Ja’ar\, Iraqi refugee families including some of the children\, who are enrolled in the refugee camp in Marka. In Bethlehem\, they visited Hogar Nino Dios\, a home for abandoned and disabled children and  the Aida Refugee camp. They shared information about a program called TLC (Trauma Loss in Children) and offered suggestions for emotional behavioral accommodations and modifications. Also water filters\, donated by the Sisters of Charity\, were brought to the refugee camps. One filter provides clean water for 5 families for 10 years and all that is needed is a bucket. \nThis is instead of the normal monthly Peace Committee meeting.
