DESCRIPTION:Lecture Description\nTens of thousands of people flee their home countries every year seeking safety from persecution\, war\, and violence. In the last four decades\, the United States has welcomed more than 3 million refugees from all over the world.  Karen Brownlee focused her research on the roughly 2\,000 Somali refugees living in Northern Kentucky. What did it take to come here? What did they leave behind? You will leave with an understanding of the refugee experience in our community. \nKaren Brownlee\nKaren Brownlee is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Social Work at NKU. In the course of her Community Practice class\, Karen was introduced to the Northern Kentucky Somali refugee community\, with whom she continues to work on local advocacy projects. Karen is married with three children\, works on a local farm\, and volunteers at her synagogue and at her children’s school. \nSix@Six is a lecture series through Northern Kentucky University.

He is currently an Associate Professor of Theology and Director of Immigration Initiatives at the Institute for Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame. He is the author or producer of multiple award-winning books and films including Dying to Live. He has worked with the U.S. Congress\, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops\, the World Council of Churches\, and the Vatican on issues of theology\, globalization\, and migration.

February 17th marks the one year anniversary of Pope Francis’ visit to the US/Mexico border. When Pope Francis prayed for migrants and refugees at the border he transformed a dusty fence into an oasis of hope. Now just days into the new administration\, immigrant and refugee families are now at greater risk than ever.  As people of faith\, we must respond with one voice: “Build bridges\, not walls.” Together our voices can echo through the halls of Congress. Join us on the 17th OUTSIDE of Senator Portman’s office for a peaceful demonstration.
